Estudaram-se os efeitos da época do ano e da altura de corte sôbre a porcentagem de lignina do capim elefante Napier (Pennisetum purpureum Schum), num experimento de cortes sucessivos, feitos à intervalos de 28 dias e realizado na Fazenda Experimental de Criação de Sertãozinho.Foram consideradas quatro datas e três alturas de corte.A análise de variância revelou não haver diferença significativa entre épocas, nem entre alturas. Foi observada, apenas, tendência a aumento do teor de lignina, considerando-se as médias das três alturas, a partir do corte de novembro até a época da floração, em abril, seguindo-se um decréscimo do mesmo. Houve, também, ligeiro aumento, nas porcentagens médias das quatro épocas, com a elevação da altura de corte. A tendência de variação com a época, no corte baixo, foi, porém, diversa da dos cortes médio e alto.As porcentagens de lignina obtidas foram relativamente baixas, indicando que, sob êsse aspecto, os sistemas de manejo usados são convenientes.

The present paper studies the effects of season and height of cutting on the lignin content of Napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum), in a trial of successive cuttings, at intervals of 28 days. This trial was carried out by WERNER etalii (35), at Fazenda Experimental de Criação de Sertãozinho, State of São Paulo.Four dates and three heights of cutting were considered.The statistical analysis revealed that there was no significant difference between season periods, nor between heights; there was only a tendency of the lignin content to increase .( considering the averages of the three heights), from the November cut up to the flowering stage, in April, decreasing afterwards. There was also a raising trend with increasing height of cutting (averages of the four periods). But the changing trend with season in the lower cut was different from that of the intermediate and high ones.
